This home improvement project was a simple, yet spacious, modern kitchen renovation in a false creek condo. One of the best features in this kitchen is one that you can no longer see. Removal of the partition wall between the dining area and the kitchen gives this apartment a much more grand and open feel, exactly what the homeowner was looking for.

Part of the challenge of this job was to suspend a new ceiling containing recessed fixtures in the kitchen area without drilling any holes in the concrete ceiling (a Strata Corporation bylaw prohibits drilling into the concrete substructure). This was accomplished by attaching the substructure to existing framing members originally attached to the ceiling. A creative solution to a unusual problem within this building.

Although the appliances are very basic and economical, this kitchen still has a “high-end” feel because of the skillful choice of a very expensive tumbled marble backsplash tile. Fourteen recessed, under cabinet lights were also installed to highlight this marble work of art.

A simple, but very attractive modern look, is provided by the high gloss white cabinet doors and drawers. Most of lower cabinets contain deep drawers to increase storage efficiency and convenience.

Perfectly positioned pot lights feature the cabinet doors while still providing general light via reflection. A gentle cast on the floor highlights the attractive, yet understated 24″x24″ off-white porcelain floor tiles.

A series of pot lights were also installed where the partition wall used to exist. These were placed specifically to illuminate the breakfast table. A gimbal pot light was also installed directly adjacent to the kitchen area to feature the homeowner’s artwork.

A manufactured quartz stone counter in a rich brown tone offers an elegant contrast to a stark. reflective, monochromatic design scheme. A low radius, under-mount sink was also installed with a premium pull-out faucet.
